A wonderful answer to addressing the perishability of matcha! It’s only been a few weeks of use, but this storage container has kept my matcha vibrant green and delicious.

Actually, since I'm always running out of matcha before the renewal date for my monthly shipment, I thought I would take advantage of the recent 20% off order and buy a larger quantity. When I asked Eric what size would fit, he suggested the medium-sized jar. When I received it due to the larger size, I found it much easier to empty the matcha from the shipping bag into the larger container. I think I'll just use this container from now on with my monthly order. Eric tells me that the tea will keep for a year in the fridge.

Excellent quality pay close attention to the size I ended up ordering two small jars as my bag of matcha was 3 ounces so I ended up having some left. Go with the medium unless you’d like one for travel. Regardless super useful and attractive for the price.

Very Sturdy

The jar is very solid and stable, and provides excellent UV protection. It stores a good bit of matcha with room to spare.

So far so great!

I bought a pair of the small jars and was impressed to find that the glass is the deep purple of UV blocking and it wasn't just a coating I'd have to worry about flaking off. The jars are smaller than I was expecting but after a moment of thinking I realised that this is actually a boon! I have limited space in the refrigerator and now I can put the bulk of my matcha in my longer storage area unopened. So far I'd say that I highly recommend these containers!

Black glass jar

I recently ordered the medium sized jar with a bag of the culinary reserve matcha. I have a few of these jars already. Firstly, the entire bag fits into the jar. That's a plus. It is a thick glass and the lid screws on easily. Nice to handle in your hand. I love that they give you a label to attach to your jar. Although, I'd expect nothing less from Breakaway. Great company with great products and service. I'll get more when I need them and would recommend these highly.

Nice Glass Body, But Not Made Fully of Glass

I do love the glass of the container, but the fact that the cap is plastic isn't as great as I was expecting. It is really hard to find an all glass container not made in China. A perfect one would be fully glass with a silicone seal ring inside around the cap to seal it in. I like how I got the option to add free jars to the 30g of the hyperpremium and coldbrew options and took the label off (a bit hard) to use them without the caps as storage. The 30g ones are a bit hard to work with as the foil package barely fits in it and the container is long rather than wide like the aluminum tins are. I've never bought from a company that sent them in jars before (just tins and/or foil packages or sometimes paper/plastic ones), so I appreciate the option but I'd probably prefer ones sent in a wider tin in a foil package.

beautiful and practical

What a beautiful container. I love being able to pour my matcha into the glass container and know it is the best I can do to keep my matcha vibrant and good. I was very happy that it came with a lovely label that I put on which makes it so much easier to spot the right container and looks really stylish.

Elegant and functional

Having so many containers and open packages can be an eyesore in any kitchen. I saw these online and have to say that I am more than satisfied with the simplistic beauty and craftsmanship.

The best quality storage jars

I have multiples of these - not just perfect for matcha, but they also give the best protection for herbs, spices, dried fruits - or anything that can be degraded by light. They've been tested to be so much more effective for light-blocking than the brown or blue jars, and look beautiful too.

Your Questions Answered

Mainly because the farmers and processors care so much; their processes take longer, require more steps, and are just harder. They’re pretty obsessed with producing Japan’s tastiest and healthiest matcha, and we don’t mind paying them well for the extraordinary product they produce. Rarity comes into it as well -- some blends, especially the named blends (Kamakura, Rikyu, Jizo, Hikari, Satoshi, and Daphne) have extremely limited production. These teas are hard to produce.

No. No sugar, additives, or any other nonsense. It’s 100% extraordinary green tea leaves, ground up into a fine powder.

Location on the tea plant, mainly. Hyperpremium is the baby leaves; we only use the newest growth. Imagine baby vegetables, baby herbs, microgreens. They haven’t had much time to develop much molecular complexity, so there are no bitter or astringent notes, just clean, chlorophyll-packed umami.

Leaves used for coldbrew are slightly older, and have a little more biocomplexity to them. That complexity does add some bitterness and astringency, but it’s undetectable when prepared with ice water, so it tastes rich and creamy. Yields are tiny for the hyperpremium, and yields are bigger with coldbrew (the leaves themselves weigh more, and are larger, hence bigger yields).

This term has lost most of its meaning. Because there is no governing body of any type that monitors/controls what can be labeled ceremonial, anyone can -- and does -- use this moniker to connote quality, even though much of the “ceremonial” matcha on the marketplace is in fact barely culinary -- much of it could be better described as “industrial.”

Moreover, many tea ceremonies in Japan notoriously serve sub-par matcha. In the end, many of the ceremonies aren’t really about tea at all, they’re about choreography and pedigree. Sometimes the teas are tasty, but more often they’re oxidized and bitter and astringent; hallmarks of culinary (or worse) matcha.

Some people insist on organic (generally for good reasons), so we searched hard for years and finally found what we feel is the tastiest and best organic matcha in the domestic Japanese market. However, our conventionally grown matcha is utterly safe, and it tends to taste better because its umami/amino acid structure is more pronounced.
