Crazy umami. Make it thick and enjoy the lustrous whorls and creamy -- yet light! -- texture, mouthfeel, and drawn-out finish. Taste reminds one of just-picked asparagus, though the aroma of the powder is of hyperfresh cacao. Loaded with l-theanine that helps keep you focused and alert for hours. Another winner from our favorite matcha coop in Ujitawara, Kyoto.
HOW TO MAKE
This is the most 'premium' of the Breakaway matchas I've tried thus far, and I have to say, I am in love. Everything that the other reviewers are noting is true: great mouthfeel, rich, vegetal taste, lingering finish, superb mood enhancer. Super special. I will add that I am giving up sugar and coffee (and yes, sugar is MUCH harder than coffee) and this umami-filled matcha is extremely helpful. Retrain your taste buds and revel in this goodness!
97 was the favorite for my budget and everything was compared to it. 98 is a different. It is a robust mouthful with a long memory. If it’s within your budget, I recommend drinking both to enjoy two distinct matcha personalities. For me, one is not “better” than the other. Drinking both is a nice contrast between blends.
Blend 98 is a pathway to finding happiness in the everyday experience of a perfect cup of matcha. 98 is in the range of affordability to have a third cup on a tough day at work, yet exquisite enough to lift any moment above the ordinary. The wabi-sabi of a hand hammered sieve & hand thrown cup add to the experience & seed the every day with moments of pure pleasure.
Blend 98 is one of my top 3 favorites - others being 99 and 95. These are my must have, go to matchas!
So far I've tried the first five blends of hyperpremium matcha from Breakaway. They are blends 93, 94, 95, 97 and 98. Of all the Blend 97 is the most popular but I found it almost too easy - very smooth but not the intense matcha hit that I like. Plus the mouthfeel did not last long afterward and I like that almost as much as drinking it.
So my favorite was Blend 98. When I first tried it in my taste test, I was a bit put off by the roasted smell of the powder - very different than the norm for matcha! But the powder itself tasted smooth and rich.
It has everything I like about matcha in spades. A very vegetal taste, which Breakaway likens to just picked asparagus. And very smooth with a nice crema. Then a wonderful, very long mouthfeel and after taste which I love. It was the best matcha I've ever had and now I wish/hope I can afford it for my next 100 gram bag.
If you've tried any of Breakaway's matcha, I highly recommend the flights of four where you can pick the four you'd like to try. That's how I got to try so many blends. I'll keep doing that until I've tried them all.
Wow! What can I say but that it is not only smooth, creamy, sweet and just plain amazing but intense, deep and complex like a fine Cabernet.
I received my very first shipment of Blend 100 yesterday and just had my first cup this morning.....I literally had tears in my eyes when I saw how green it was!!! I know it sounds crazy but you cannot believe the garbage I've been drinking. I've been choking down this army green/brown gritty, bitter liquid every morning, trying to mask the flavor with organic honey. My hands were shaking while I was transporting it into the tin -- you would think it was liquid gold! I was licking the powder off of my fingers and when I tasted it I knew I had found the magic. Can you tell how excited I am? :)
So a huge thank you -- and I should thank Google for leading me to you! I have a close friend named Nick who is 83 years young and he looks like he's about 60. He attributes much of his youthful appearance and fitness level to all of the green tea he drinks. I was telling him about the matcha I ordered and he's never heard of matcha (what???). Anyway, I'm going to his house on Friday and I'm going to make him a believer!
Thank you again!
Love the 98! It has a slightly nutty taste, which is different than the others and quite pleasing. And froths very nicely, too.
And this has nothing to do with the taste, but I do love looking into the abundance of a nearly full jar ...
May not be qualified to give the review of a expert. Since June of 2015 Matcha has been my morning ritual. 98 comes from a fine line of teas that have been carefully selected. In the Atlanta area I have not found a selection local that I would even begin to compare. I have ordered directly from Japan with satisfaction on a couple occasions. 98 ranks high on my scale. In one word, fulfilling. I went thru the first 30 grams in 12 days. My Thumbs UP goes mostly to Eric and his staff at Breakaway Matcha for the dedication and insight for finding another great tea. I'm still in appreciation mode of finding someone to discuss the world of Matcha with.
