A feisty, gorgeous matcha that's ready to slap you with its attitude.
Racy. Fantastic color, heady aromas, intense "matcha" taste (think strong green tea ice cream), faint twinges of bitterness (which gives it its sass).
Plenty of umami and natural sweetness means it pairs beautifully with food, especially sweets. Makes the world's best matcha salt.
If Breakaway Blend 100 is a great Burgundy along the lines of Romanee-Conti, and Breakaway Blends 99 and 97 are coveted, cult Napa cabernets, Breakaway Blend 94 is more like a "vintner's reserve" from a top producer: a beautiful epicurean experience and phenomenal value that soars above similarly priced matcha. Has verve and power, like a zen wake-up stick.
From Tawara, Uji, Kyoto Prefecture.

This stuff is like a dance in my mouth when I drink it. The flavor is grassy and smooth, with very little bitterness.
While it might be considered a sin to adulterate such fine matcha, I do a butter-based frappe with this, and the flavor is turned up to eleven. I drink it throughout my morning at work and instantly have heightened mood and productivity.

I have had very few phone conversations as pleasant as the one I had with Eric. When I had trouble on the site, he was very helpful and clearly concerned with my getting the best service, all the way across the country. We solved the problem, everything arrived perfectly, and I've enjoyed a cup of 94 every other day since. It's been excellent tea, and as a student, serves well as my breakfast.

I love this Matcha for my mornings, however I would eventually like to try the 99 when I can afford it. What I love the most though, is the little handwritten notes Eric includes with shipment. It adds a personal touch and always makes me smile. I will be ordering my Matcha from this company for years to come.

Since we're talking about blend 94 3oz pouch, I'll give it a 5 star rating, i'm basing it on its qualities, and not compared to those of the other ones. It's pretty vibrant and it sets me straight. I love the way it makes me feel. Yoga, reading, listening to music, working and being with friends all gains a new meaning. I don't know about you, but I like to have enough matcha stored away, and to make it even better, it's quality at a great price! I say yes!

I look forward to this everyday! So delicious and I always feel more energized and focused afterwards!

I discovered this matcha blend through David Yeah-Dave Romanelli's weekly email blast. I decided to give it a try because I've been looking for an alternative to my morning coffee.
I've got to say, it is delish! It has become a party of my morning ritual, and I look forward to starting my day the matcha way!! Thank you Eric!!

I am not new to matcha. I been drinking it for 4 years and have tried and experimented with many of the easily available brands in the U.S., including:
• DoMatcha's Matcha (2nd harvest and ceremonial grade)
• Ito En's Matcha (including their Tea's Tea Matcha which received first place at the North American Tea competition with a very high score of 89/100)
• Bird Pick's Matcha
• Several brands sold at Japanese supermarkets like Mitsuwa and Marukai.
Having tried all this matcha, I was skeptical that Eric's could be any better. Before I even tried Blend 94, I could tell it was different: even though it was sealed in a bag (for freshness) I could make out a sweet and rich aroma. After reading Eric's blog post on water temperature and matcha, I experimented with several ways of preparing Blend 94: using 180 F water, using 140 F water, and using cool water. While the tea was delicious in all three cases, I recommend trying this tea with cool water - that seemed to bring out its umami to the maximum.
Like most high quality tea I've tried, Blend 94 lingers with a pleasant sweetness in the back of your throat long after you have finished it. Eric describes this matcha as "sassy" with "faint twinges of bitterness", which, given how sweet the matcha seemed to me, makes me realize how bitter brands like DoMatcha and ItoEn are in comparison. Blend 94 is by far the best matcha I've tried. I am no tea judge, but given that ItoEn's Teas Tea Matcha received 89/100, I would imagine Blend 94 is deserving of something close to 100 on the same scale.
Lastly, I really cannot imagine any transaction with Eric going sour for any reason: he is very responsive to emails, packs your order carefully, and ships it immediately. He is passionate about matcha, friendly, knowledgeable, and seems to personally handle all the orders. Thanks Eric!

I came across this product through a blog post (I forget which blog), and decided to give it a try.
It's the best green tea I've ever had. I enjoy espresso and was shocked at the crema that could be generated with the matcha using a hand-held frother.
I have a cup every morning.

I gotta say, this is quite a strong blend for the first time matcha drinker such as myself. I'm a barista and coffee drinker and have spent most of my professional time with coffee rather than tea so I wanted to expand my horizons. Let me tell you, this blend nearly knocked me out of my chair on my first try. It was such an overwhelming whirlwind of flavors that were so drastically, yet appealingly, different from the flavors of coffee!
Since my first cup, I've come to ADORE this matcha blend. It's bitter, it's sweet, and laden with the umami flavor that matcha has opened my taste buds to, and it comes at you all at once.It is not for the faint of heart, definitely a seasoned drinker's cup, but a true delicacy.
Thank you Eric Gower and the people of Breakaway Matcha for expanding my mind and palate to this wonderful beverage! Matcha now has a place in my heart right next to my coffee :P

I've tried several random brands of Matcha over the past few years and this blend is by far the best value. Yes, it is more than your normal tea, but it's also worth it if you're a Matcha fan. The product and customer service our really top notch so it's at least worth a try. I'm convinced if you don't like it you just might not be a Matcha fan in general.

I had wanted to try matcha but not knowing if I would like it I went cheap and tried a couple of brands that almost put me off of matcha. Fortunately my wife bought me the 94 as a gift (as part of the Nirvana set)and it turned everything around.
The 94 is smooth, herbal, slightly earthy and has the nice green grassy flavors that I was hoping for when I decided to try matcha. Since then I have tried the 97 which is maybe a little smoother but as a day to day drink I enjoy the 94. We are lucky enough to have a Japanese Cultural Center near where I live and I have had matcha as part of their tea ceremony. Breakaway matcha is every bit as good as what they were using. A word of advice from my own experience if you are just getting started, follow the directions and do not use boiling water. It brings out some funky flavors! If you prepare it as he explains on the website it is a whole different drink.
I normally don't drink a lot of caffeine so it tends to give me the jitters and a stomach ache so I was worried that matcha would be too powerful but I find that Breakaway matchas tend to be very mellow while still giving me the positive effects of caffeine.
By the way the Nirvana Set that was part of my gift is very nice and if you don't already have a bunch of matcha paraphernalia it is the best of everything you will need.

So far this is the only blend of matcha that I've tried from breakaway and I love it. I'm a cheap, poor college student so I have yet to try the finer blends but I love this stuff just fine. Over the past year or so I have tried probably 6 different brands of matcha and I can say with complete certainty that this stuff is the best. A few varieties I've bought in the past were significantly more expensive, and shipped to me directly from Japan yet they far more bitter and clearly less fresh. Hopefully in the near future I'll get to try some of the nice blends that breakaway has to offer.

I switched to Blend 94 from 97 for everyday use because I was drinking more matcha and wanted to lower the cost. I have not been disappointed. My daily 3-4 cups of matcha continue to be a pleasure. The taste is great. Although the 94 is not quite as sweet as the 97 it is still wonderful and the feeling of well-being and mental clarity after drinking a cup are the same.

This is the smoothest most delicious green tea, I have ever enjoyed. I enjoy serving it to those who have never experienced Matcha, because who doesn't like introducing friends to one of life's pleasures. Perfect after dinner or before yard work (haha)

Blend 94 is my everyday matcha. I have at least two shots in the morning, and it just makes me feel happy and clear. I like the caffeination without irritation vibe. It pairs really well with almond butter and honey on toast, and sometimes I'll even sprinkle a bit on my poached eggs along with sea salt. Earthy, clean, smooth, just flat-out delicious.

Honestly, this is just great tea. I like it because it's richer than steeped teas (reminds me more of espresso but with green crema). Also, you feel good after you drink it. I stopped drinking coffee because it had the opposite effect.
It's not totally necessary, but I'd recommend the matcha tool kit (or at least a portable frother). the frother really brings the crema and aromas to life. I'm looking forward to trying the higher blends and comparing.

When choosing a Breakaway blend, I reasoned that since I like my coffee black, my bourbon straight, and my beer dark, the Blend 94 would be the way to go. I find the 94 to deliver the aroma of a freshly mowed country lawn (read: less manicured, suburban lawn, more hearty, untamed grassland) and a taste similar to a rich, barrel-aged stout... or at least, the green-tea version of a stout: a very slight bitterness that disappears for a wonderfully smooth aftertaste. With a built-in wake-you-up laser-focus that trumps coffee on its best day. What's not to like?
